From De Volksvriend, September 26, 1935, Valley Springs, S.D. news:

Verleden week werd Jan Reit ziek aan hooge koortsen, en teekenen van flu en pneumonia, die aanhielden totdat hij Dinsdag, 17 Sept., kalm heenging. Nog maar drie weken geleden werd hun 2½-jarig zoontje dood gevonden in een hek.

Jan Reit werd geboren te Rock Valley, Ia., den 5n Feb. 1899, en overleed 17 Sept., 1935, zijnde 36 jaar, 7 mnd, en 12 d. oud. Den 6n Dec., 1918, huwde hij met Josie Abma van Rock Valley, die hem 25 Dec., 1921, ontviel, hem nalatende met 2 kinderen. Den 8n Juni, 1923, huwde hij met Jennie Vierhout van Inwood, Ia. Deze echt werd gezegend met 7 kinderen, waarvan 3 hem voorgingen.

Mr. Reit wordt overleefd door zijn vrouw, en de volgende kinderen: Harold 15 en Richard 13 jaar (uit zijn eerste huwelijk), Herman 10, Edna 5, Stanley 4, en Joyce, 9 maand; dan zijn ouders, Mr. en Mrs. Herman Reit te Rock Valley, Ia.; een zuster, Mrs. Siebert Terpstra, alhier; en zes broeders: Herm, Alvord, Ia.; George, te Des Moines, Ia.; Delco (Dick), te Detroit, Mich.; Frank, Los Angeles, Calif.; Marion (Mike), te Beresford, S.D.; en William, Hull, Ia.; en verdere familie, neven en nichten.

De begrafenis had Vrijdag, 20 Sept., plaats, onder leiding van Ds. Cloo, van Steen, Minn., en Ds. Walquist van de Meth. gem. Mr. en Mrs. Al Van de Veght, Mrs. Will Vugteveen, Mrs. Van de Sande, Mr. en Mrs. Buma en nog meer, allen van Rock Valley, waren hier ter begrafenis.

TRANSLATION

Last week Jan Reit fell ill with a high fever, and signs of flu and pneumonia, which persisted until he passed away quietly on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Just three weeks age their 2½-year-old son was found dead in a fence.

Jan Reit was born in Rock Valley, Iowa, Feb. 5, 1899, and died Sept. 17, 1935, being 36 years, 7 months, and 12 days old. On Dec. 6, 1918, he married Josie Abma of Rock Valley, who died Dec. 25, 1921, leaving him with 2 children. On June 8, 1923, he married Jennie Vierhout of Inwood, Ia. This union was blessed with 7 children, 3 of whom preceded him.

Mr. Reit is survived by his wife and the following children: Harold 15 and Richard 13 (from his first marriage), Herman 10, Edna 5, Stanley 4, and Joyce, 9 months; by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Reit of Rock Valley, Ia.; a sister, Mrs. Siebert Terpstra, this place; and six brothers: Herm, Alvord, Ia.; George, of Des Moines, Ia.; Delco (Dick), of Detroit, Mich.; Frank, Los Angeles, Calif.; Marion (Mike), of Beresford, S.D.; and William, Hull, Ia.; and other family, nephews and nieces.

The funeral took place on Friday, Sept. 20, under direction of Rev. Cloo, from Steen, Minn., and Rev. Walquist of the Methodist church. Mr. and Mrs. Al Van de Veght, Mrs. Will Vugteveen, Mrs. Van de Sande, Mr. and Mrs. Buma and others, all from Rock Valley, were here for the funeral.

(A brief news note in the same issue of the Volksvriend, Rock Valley news, says that he was buried at Rowena, S.D., and that a few weeks ago a son had died in an accident and the father was so distressed by the loss that he died of brain fever.)

It gives his parents as Herman Reit (1864-1951) and Jantje Boog Reit (1866-1948); lists seven siblings; gives his wives as Josie Abma Reit (1898-1921) and Jennie Vierhout Reit (1903-1986); and lists 8 children: Harold Lawrence Reit (1919-2007), Richard Joe Reit (1921-2004), Herman Alvin Reit (1925-2005), Edna Reit (1928-1929), Stanley Earl Reit (1932-1997), Wayne R. Reit (1933-1935), Joyce Marie Reit Hayes (1934-2014), and Jane Waynette Reit Unzelman (1936-2000).

His World War I draft registration card (September 1918) shows him, age 19, living in Rock Valley, working for farmer R. Dykstra; he is tall, of medium build, blue eyes, light hair.
