Former Orange City Bank Employee Dies In Army Hospital

Pvt. Herman Vander Wilt, 32, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Vander Wilt, of Orange City, died at the General hospital at Topeka, Kansas at one o'clock Monday afternoon, October 30.

Pvt. Vander Wilt entered the service on November 3, 1942 and was home on furlough in April last spring. Shortly after his furlough on June 7, he left the states for overseas service and was sent to New Caledonia. While enroute for foreigh service he became ill and entered the hospital there on July 1. About a month ago he was returned to the states and spent about two weeks in a hospital in California and was then sent to the hospital at Topeka, Kansas.

His wife spent a few days with him there, returning home last week and on Sunday afternoon the family received a telegram that complications had set in, causing him to pass away Monday afternoon.

Left to mourn his departure are his wife, the former Matilda Buurman and two small children. Also his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit and Mathilda (DeGraaf) Vander Wilt of Orange City and three sisters, Mrs. Arie Bomgaars of Boyden, Mrs. Henry Rowenhorst of Orange City, Mrs. Gerrit B. Koerselman of Hull and two brothers, Frank Vander Wilt of Middleburg and Captain Dick Vander Wilt formerly of Hull and at present in the service stationed at Washington.

Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock at the home and at 1:30 at the First Reformed Church at Orange City, with Reverend Henry Colenbrander officiating. Burial will take place at the Orange City Cemetery.

Previous to his entrance into the service he was employed at the Northwestern State Bank at Orange City.
