AGED SIOUX CENTER RESIDENT PASSES ON

AUKE VANDER SCHAAF CAME TO UNITED STATES IN 1883 — WAS 88 YEARS OLD

Auke Vander Schaaf, pioneer resident of Sioux Center, passed away at his home here after a brief illness, although he had not been in good health for some months. He was 88 years old at the time of his death.

He was born in Vriesland, the Netherlands, August 7, 1837 and passed the first part of his life there, coming to this country in 1883.

He is survived by his widow, Sytske (Bruinsma) Vander Schaaf; seven children, namely, Simon Vander Schaaf of Sioux Center, Mrs. Dick Visser of Doon, Mrs. George Barlett of Ireton, Mrs. Peter Cambier of Orange City, R.A. Vander Schaaf, Mrs. Chas. Vander Ploeg and Mrs. John Poppen, all of Sioux Center; one brother, J.R. Vander Schaaf and one sister, Mrs. Dykstra, both of Sioux Center; forty grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family lived on a farm near Sioux Center until 26 years ago, when they moved to town.

Funeral services were held at the home and Central Reformed Church, Monday May 10th, with Reverend Haverkamp in charge. Grandchildren of Mr. Vander Schaaf were pallbearers.
