John Vander Sanden, 93, of Rock Valley, died Saturday, February 20, 1988 at a hospital in Rock Valley.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 22 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Valley with the Reverend Norman Van Heukelom and the Reverend Raymond Denekas officiating. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery in Rock Valley. Visitation was held at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Mr. Vander Sanden was born October 15, 1894, in Ede, Holland where he attended school. He came to the United States with his parents, Henry and Cornelia (Pater) Vander Sanden, at the age of 12.

He married Hermina Wissink on January 31, 1918, in Rock Valley. They farmed southwest of Rock Valley, they later farmed near Martin, South Dakota, for nine years. They returned to Rock Valley and semi-retired in 1953.

They retired and moved into Rock Valley in 1964. They moved to the Valley Manor Nursing Home in December, 1984. Mrs. Vander Sanden died February 28, 1986.

He was a member of the First Reformed Church and served on the church consistory for many years. He was an active member of the Rock Valley Senior Citizens.

Survivors include a son, Clarence of Rock Valley; four daughters, Mrs. John D. (Dorothy) Driesen of Rock Valley, Mrs. Leonard (Henritta) Bajema of Hills, Minnesota, Mrs. John (Esther) Van Otterloo of Bellflower, California, and Mrs. Leonard (Mabel) Ver Mulm of Hull; two sisters, Mrs. Tom (Dena) Lee of Long Beach, California, and Mrs. Dick (Jennie) Roelofs of Rock Valley; 20 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.
