Doce Chaquette, better known to the people of this vicinity as D. Sackett, died at his home in this city Tuesday evening, after an illness of more that a year’s duration. Doce Chaquette was born in Montreal and was 72 years of age at the time of this death. He was one of the pioneers of South Dakota and located on a homestead in Union County, near Alcester, in 1872. He and his family resided there for many years and then they moved to northern Iowa. A few years later they came to Hawarden. Mrs. Chaquette/Sackette died about four years ago. On Son Rock Sackett, was born to them and resided in this city. Owing to the difficulty his neighbors experienced in writing and pronouncing the French name, He permitted the more simplified spelling by them, but always retained the French as his own. The funeral was held at the home this afternoon, Rev. T. A. Ambler conducting the services.

Research note: In the 1910 census of Hawarden Rock Sackett was 39 born abt 1871 married 10 Jul 1906 Nebraska to Ottilla M. Hackbarth born abt 1882, parents of Rock both born in Canada, a son Fred Sackette was born 1894 South Dakota. Found death record of Jun 24, 1935 he died of pneumonia died in Sioux City hospital buried in Calvary cemetery, at the time he was a transient worker living at the Salvation aramy. Relatives…unknown.
