Death again has taken from our midst an aged and highly respected as well as a pioneer resident when Mrs. August Vander Hamm passed away Sunday after an illness of some weeks. She passed her 88th birthday earlier in May. She was next in age to our oldest resident, Grandma Braaks, who is one month older than Mrs. Vander Hamm was. Her husband preceded her in death a few weeks ago.

Anna Maria E. "Mary" Vlotho was born and grew up in Clayton County, Iowa. She was married to August Vander Hamm February 7, 1882 and for 61 years the honored couple traveled life together, going through hardships and trials that came to early settlers. They were pioneer residents of Sioux County and did much to the conversion of a wild raw country into what is now a grand garden spot.

Eight children were born to them, two of whom, Louis and Robert, preceded them in death. The children who survive are: Henry and Mrs. George Eilts of Spencer, South Dakota; Mrs. William Eilts of Struble; Mrs. Fred Jahn of Maurice; Herbert and Elizabeth of Ireton. Besides the children and grandchildren she leaves one sister, Mrs. Gilbert Darling of Pasadena, California and one brother, John Vlotho of Ireton and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Her life was always an active one. She loved her church and until her last illness was a faithful attendant. She lived a life of true helpfulness and her family and those who needed her were her most uppermost thought. She was a loyal wife, mother, neighbor and friend.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church with Reverend H.W. Krieger in charge. Interment was in Ireton.
