RESEARCH NOTES

There are two entries for him in the Sioux County Cemetery Index: Voss, Arnold, b. 1899, d. 1935, Sherman Twp Cemetery, Maurice IA (WPA Index); and a second one with his surname spelled Vos. FindaGrave.com has a photo of his headstone, surname spelled Voss.

His death certificate gives his birth date as Feb. 14, 1901; parents Wm Voss, born in Germany, and Lena Voss, born in Switzerland; died at 7:56 a.m. April 26, 1935; cause of death, septicopyemia [septicemia accompanied by multiple abscesses].

His marriage certificate gives his occupation as “business,” his parents as William Voss and Lena Roedecker, Martha’s parents as Edward Rozenboom and Clara Ida Marie Royen; married at Maurice, August 23, 1934.

His FindaGrave.com page gives his full name as Arnold William Vos (although his headstone has just Arnold Voss); parents William Otto Voss (1870-1947) and Lena Rothacher Voss (1875-1947), wife Martha Rozenboom Friets (1905-1972).

His World War I draft registration card (Sept. 1918) gives his birth date as Feb. 15, 1900; home address 709 Madison, LeMars; present occupation, “In State Training School for Boys, Eldora”; nearest relative, William Voss, 709 Madison, LeMars; tall, medium build, blue eyes, light brown hair. (The state training school is explained in a news note in the Hawarden Independent, June 14, 1917: Arnold Voss, a 17-year-old LeMars boy, has been committed to the industrial school at Eldora as the immediate result of stealing some hams and some money from Robert Schultz at that place. The boy has been in several prior pilfering scrapes. He was only recently released from the state asylum at Cherokee where he was committed a year ago after acting queerly, supposedly as the result of a sunstroke received while working on a farm in South Dakota last year.)
