Funeral Mrs. Vanden Berg Is Held Saturday

Many friends were saddened and deeply shocked last week by the sudden passing of Mrs. John B. Vanden Berg, resident of the Rock Valley vicinity for more than 20 years.

She had suffered a stroke during the past summer but was apparently well on the road to recovery until suddenly taken all again last week. Death came on October 9.

Born Anna De Leeuw in the province Overreissel, Netherlands, on April 15, 1892, she came to this country with her parents and one sister at the age of 11.

She had often remarked that it was her birthday, when they boarded the ship for America.

The family located in Northern Sioux County and on February 23, 1912, she was married at the parsonage to Mr. J.B. Vanden Berg, the Reverend John De Jonge performing the ceremony.

After their marriage the couple lived on the Wiese farm of Perkins for 7 years and then farmed near Boyden for a year.

Then they purchased the beautiful farm home three miles east of Rock Valley on the state highway.

In 1936 the happiness of the family was broken by the death of the husband and father, but Mrs. Vanden Berg and the children continued to live on the farm.

Besides her father, Albert De Leeuw of Rock Valley, and the one sister, Mrs. Gerrit Baker, of Hull, the beloved mother is survived by four children, as follows: Ben J. residing on the other farm, 1˝ miles northeast of the home farm; Misses Jennie and Johanna, and Albertus, all at home. There is also one grandchild, Johnny, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Vanden Berg. Their first child, a boy, died in infancy.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 12:30 at the home and at 2:00 o’clock at the Nederland Reformed Church, with the Reverend Vander Hoef, the pastor, conducting the services.

She was laid to rest beside the remains of her husband and little son, who preceded her to the Beyond, in beautiful Valley View Cemetery.

The deep sympathy of the community is extended to the family in the hour of their bereavement.
