WAS A NATIVE BUT CAME TO AMERICA 57 YEARS AGO---LIVED IN HAWARDEN THREE YEARS

Fred Beck, an aged citizen of this city, passed away at his home here early Tuesday morning following a lingering illness of about two years from cancer and bladder trouble. The immediate cause of his death, however, was pneumonia which he contracted only a few days prior to his death. His weakened physical condition made it impossible for him to withstand the ravages of this acute attack. A little more than a year ago he entered the hospital at Akron where he received treatment for a time, later going to Sioux City where he was given radius treatments but he secured no relief and suffered greatly throughout his long illness.

Short funeral services were held at the home at 2:30 this afternoon, conducted by Reverend B.L. Carlton, pastor of the Big Springs Baptist Church, Reverend J.T. Parker of the Baptist Church in Hawarden and Reverend W.A. WinterStein of the Hawarden M.E. Church. The remains will be taken to Kiron, Iowa, on the early morning train Friday for interment there.

The deceased was born in Misterult, Kalmerlan, Sweden, July 27, 1845, so had attained the advanced age of 77 years, 7 months, and 9 days. He came to America in 1866 and settled at Stratford, Iowa, later moving to Kiron. He resided at Odebolt for eighteen years, then on a farm in North Dakota for six years and then for a time in Minnesota prior to coming to Hawarden three years ago.

On July 3, 1871, he was united in marriage with Carrie Starr, who preceded him in death. Six children were born to this union, four of whom survived him: Mrs. Charles Bergin of Kiron, Iowa and Theron Beck, Mrs. Della Larson and Mrs. Minnie Wagoner of Big Springs. On June 24, 1888, he was united in marriage with Hannah Gustofson who is left to mourn his death. He was a member of the Baptist Church of Kiron and always led a faithful Christian life.

While not widely known in this city the friends whom he had here regarded him highly and will extend sincere sympathy to the widow and children in the loss of a good husband and a kind and affectionate father.
