Mr. John Zeutenhorst, age 94, of Orange City, passed away on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, August 3, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a family prayer service on Saturday, at 9:30am, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Visitation will be after 4:00pm on Friday, with the family present from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the funeral home.

John Richard was born on November 25, 1924, in Hull, the son of Henry and Jennie (Haze) Zeutenhorst. He was raised in the Alton area and graduated from the Alton High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served in a division referred to as “The Ghost Army”. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

On May 31, 1947, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Eileen Oliver in Sergeant Bluff. They made their home in Orange City, where he worked for the Sioux County Engineer’s office. In retirement, he helped with maintenance at Northwestern College for 25 years. In 2009 John and Phyllis moved to the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City. Phyllis passed away on October 14, 2009, in Sioux City, after more than 62 years of marriage.

Mr. Zeutenhorst was a member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City, where he had been an elder and Sunday School teacher. He was also member of the Pressman-Kosters American Legion. In earlier years he had served on the Orange City City Council and had volunteered as a fireman for thirty years.

He was an avid reader and enjoyed spending winters in Ocala, Florida. Faith, family, friends, and patriotism were core values for John.

Survivors include his two children and their spouses, Jan and Dan Berg, of Watertown, South Dakota; and Tim and Lori Zeutenhorst, of Orange City; four grandchildren, Nicole, and her husband, Scott Carver, of Kodiak, Alaska; Lindsey, and her husband, Adam Van Conant, of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Tyler Zeutenhorst, and his wife, Rachel, of Orange City; and Anna Zeutenhorst, of Elkhorn, Iowa; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas Carver, Matthew Carver, and Isaac Zeutenhorst; and a special friend, June Vanden Berge, of Orange City.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, David Zeutenhorst; a grandson, Timothy John Zeutenhorst; two brothers, Bernard and Eddie; and two sisters, Irene and Daisy.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Area Home Health and Hospice.
