Pier Wiersma, age 97, of Orange City, died Sunday, October 1, 1995 at the Long Term Care Facility of the Orange City Hospital.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, October 3, 1995 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. The Reverend Ralph A. Pontier and the Reverend Paul E. Bakker officiated. Interment followed at West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City under the direction of the Van Etten-Oolman-Van Gelder Funeral Home in Orange City.

Pier was born June 4, 1898 at Orange City, the son of John & Saakje (De Groot) Wiersma. He was raised at Orange City.

On February 7, 1921, he married Alyda Kosters at Sioux Center. They farmed at Alton for about 11 years, at Maurice about two years, and then west of Orange city about nine years. In about 1945 they moved into Orange City where he was a self-employed cement mason. He retired in the 1970's. Mrs. Wiersma died February 14, 1987 at Orange City.

In November of 1986 Mr. Wiersma became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City, and in June of 1994, he transferred to the long term care facility.

He was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church. Pier was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his four daughters, Sarah Ann "Dolly" and her husband Jerry Reinsma of Orange City, Wilma Foreman of Orange City, Darlene White of San Diego, California, and Helen and her husband Elmer Huizenga of Orange City; a daughter-in-law, Marie Wiersma of Redlands, California; 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Alice Wiersma or Orange City and Jennie Wiersma of Sheldon.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son Kenneth; two sons-in-law, John Foreman and Frank White; a great-granddaughter; eight brothers and sisters and nine half-brothers and half-sisters.
