Many Attend Funeral Rites For Late Isaac Claerbout

Cedar Grove, Wis. – Funeral services for Isaac Claerbout, who passed away at his home near Cedar Grove Tuesday, were conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, at the Claerbout home, followed by a service at the First Reformed church here at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. J. J. De Waard of the Calvary Presbyterian church of this village officiated, and burial was at the Oostburg cemetery, the following elders of Calvary church acting as pallbearers: John D. Voskud, J. H. Harmelink, Henry Huibregtse, Harry and Ben Voskull and Ray Dulmes.

Preceding the church services, Miss Antoinette Dukse played “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth.” A mixed quartet composed of Mrs. Chester Hemen, Mrs. J. J. De Waard, Henry Harmelink and Ben Nonhof, accompanied by Miss Dirkse, sang “Rock of Ages Cleft For Me” and “Blessed Assurance, Jesus Is Mine.” The Rev. Mr. De Waard’s message of consolation was based on Hebrews 13[?], Verse 14, “For here we have no continuing city, but we seek one to come.”

Isaac Claerbout was born September 7, 1875, on the farm near Oostburg, where Peter Adriance now resides. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Henry Claerbout. His youth was spent in this locality until the family moved to Iowa when he was 13 years of age. His marriage to Miss Fannie De Roos took place at Orange City, Iowa, May 27, 1897, with the Rev. Mr. Bouma officiating.

After their marriage, the couple operated a farm near Hull, Iowa, for 14 years, when they moved to another farm near Le Mars, Iowa, for a five-year period. The Claerbout family moved here 21 years ago, purchasing the homestead where they live at present.

Mr. Claerbout was well-known and highly regarded in this community. At the time of his death he was serving his second term on the Town Holland board of supervisors, and he was also an elder of Calvary church since its organization. Prior to that he served in a similar capacity in the First Presbyterian church of Cedar Grove.

A sister, Miss Jennie, preceded him in death as also did a son and daughter, who died in infancy.

Floral tributes from organizations, relatives and friends attested to the esteem in which Mr. Claerbout was held. The services were largely attended with many present from nearby communities.

Among those from away were John Claerbout of St. Cloud, Minn.; William Claerbout of Hull, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Jacob De Leeuw of Boyden, Iowa; Mrs. John Stientjes and Mrs. Case Ver Hoef of Sheldon, Iowa; Mrs. Annie Dethmars of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester De Smidt of Racine, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Isaac De Smidt of Sheboygan Falls; Foster De Smidt of Cascade; Floyd De Smidt of Manitowoc; Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Wolfert, and Mrs. Angeline Lensink and son Arthur of Sheboygan.
