From the Sioux Center News, August 9, 1934, Hull news:

Mr. A. Roggen passed away Sunday at about noon. He has been ill for some time and the end was not unexpected. All his children were at his bedside when the end came.

Mr. Roggen had almost reached the age of 82 years, and last fall celebrated their sixty-first wedding anniversary. He leaves to mourn his departure a widow and seven children, three sons and four daughters.

Funeral services were held Wednesday from the First Ref. Church with Rev. G. H. Douwstra officiating and assisted by Rev. Brinks.

Arie Roggen Former Alton Resident

Arie Roggen of Hull, an early resident of the Alton vicinity, passed on at his home is Hull Sunday morning at the age of 81 years.

Mr. Roggen was born in the Netherlands Sept. 28, 1852, and in 1880 brought his family to the United States where they settled on a farm southwest of Alton. They resided in this vicinity until 28 years ago, when they moved to Hull.

Surviving are Mrs. Roggen and seven children, Gerrit and James of Sheldon; Mrs. Henry Koerselman, Hull; Rev. John Roggen, Hamilton, Mich,; Mrs. Henry Koele, Hull; Mrs. Louis Lutjens, Sheldon, and Miss Alice at home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the First Ref. church, Hull. Grandsons were pallbearers. Mrs. Henry Fennema of Alton is a niece of Mr. Roggen. The Fennemas and Muyskens and a large group of Alton relatives and friends went to Hull to attend the services.

A. Roggen, a resident of Hull and vicinity for many years, died at his home Sunday morning after suffering from a lingering illness of cancer of the stomach.

Old Time Hull Resident Passed Away Sunday Morn.

Relatives and friends alike were surely sorrowful last Sunday morning when the news of the death of Mr. A. G. Roggen was passed around. He passed away peacefully between the hours of eleven and twelve o’clock at his home.

Mr. Roggen had been very active in church work and enjoyed a wide circle of friends. He had been ill for nine months, gradually failing, until the end came. If he had lived until the 28th of September he would have been eighty-two years old.

Mr. and Mrs. Roggen celebrated their sixty-first wedding anniversary last November 8th. They also visited in the Old Country on two different occasions, in 1912 and 1914, on their trip home from the Holy Lands.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at one o’clock from the home and at one thirty from the First Reformed Church, conducted by Rev. G. H. Douwstra.

OBITUARY

Arie G. Roggen was born at Ter Schelling, in the Netherlands, on September 28th, 1852. On November 8th, 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Alida Swarts, who with him and the family came to America in the spring of 1882.

They settled first on a farm northeast of Alton, and later bought a farm southwest of Alton, and in 1894 moved to Middleburg, from where they retired to Hull in 1907.

Thirteen children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Roggen, four dying in infancy; their eldest daughter, Mrs. Geurink, died in 1899, and Cornelius in 1911. Besides his wife, Mr. Roggen is survived by the following seven children: Gerrit and James of Sheldon, Ella and Mrs. Henry Koerselman of Hull, Rev. J. A. Roggen of Hamilton, Michigan, Mrs. Henry Koele of Hull, and Mrs. L. H. Lutjens of Sheldon; thirty-five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

His death certificate has Arie G. Roggen, retired farmer, wife Alida Roggen; born in Holland, parents Gerrit Roggen and Martha Schaap; died at 12:15 p.m. August 5, 1934; cause, cancer diaphragm, onset Feb. 1934, confirmed via X-Ray.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has him as Arie G. Roggen, but FindaGrave.com has him as Arien Gerrits Roggen; born 28 Sep 1952 at West-Terschelling, Friesland, Netherlands. It lists the nine of his children that survived infancy.

WieWasWie.nl has a marriage index record for groom, Arien Rogge, 20 years old, born in Terschelling, parents Gerrit Ariens Rogge and Martje Cornelis Schaap; bride Alida Swart, age 21, born in Terschelling, parents Cornelis Wigles Swart and Alida Jans Rotgans; married in Terschelling 8 November 1872. There is also a birth index record for him (28 Sep 1852, same parents) that calls him Arien Rogge. However, birth record indexes for his children call him Arien Roggen.
