MATTHIAS WATHIER, WELL KNOWN FARMER, PASSES ON

Mathias Wathier, well known farmer of the Alton vicinity, was stricken by a heart attack Friday morning, April 13, at his home northeast of Alton. He passed on at about 10:45 A.M. and was found in the farm yard shortly there after by his brother George who was working nearby. The faithful farm dog was at his side keeping watch.

He had not been in prime health since February. 1955, when he had a serious heart attack. However, he had spent the previous Saturday in town, as was his custom, and appeared in good health and spirits that morning, when he went out to “check” the pigs. He had great pride and interest in the farm livestock, having been for years a highly successful livestock breeder and farmer. The past year he was unable to take part in the more strenuous farm activities, but continued to help and advise his brother. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

Born May 29, 1886, to Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Wathier, early settlers, living northeast of Alton, he attended rural school and St. Mary’s Academy. While a youth he was employed for several years in the Cannon Valley Flour Mills at Cannon Falls, Minnesota. Later he returned to the home farm to assist his father, taking charge of the farm after his father’s death and residing in the home of his birth, together with his youngest brother, George and the latter’s family, until his passing.

Rosary was held at the Allen Funeral Home and funeral services were at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Monday morning at 8:00 o’clock, with interment in the parish cemetery. Very Reverend Z. Reising officiated. Music was furnished by the male choir. Pallbearers were Henry Wathier, and five nephews: Arnold Streff, Al Streff, Jr., Milo Streff, Jerry Bowers and Sebastian Wathier.

One of a family of 14, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters: Joe of Centerville, South Dakota; Mrs. Lena Kohles of Twin Falls, Idaho; Henry and Mrs. A.L. Streff of Alton; Charles of Kimberly, Idaho; Mrs. George E. Bowers of Alton; Leo of Butt, Nebraska and George of Alton. Preceding him in death were his parents and five brothers and sisters: John, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Mrs. Victor Erickson (Mary) and Mrs. Mike Herrig (Ida).
