Matthew Walpole passed away at his home in Rock Valley at 5:55 Friday evening, December 20, 1940. He had suffered with cancer the last few years and had one eye removed at the sanitarium at Savannah, Missouri.

Matthew Walpole was born on a farm in Delaware County, Iowa and in September 1873 moved with his parents to Storm Lake and later came to this vicinity. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Stevens on November 28, 1890 and to this union four children were born, two of whom died in infancy. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Walpole; his daughter, Miss Laura Walpole of Mason City and his son James of Sioux City. He is also survived by the following brothers and sisters: James Walpole and Mrs. Mary Howell of Rock Valley; Emmet Walpole of Hancock, Minnesota; Ellen, Mrs. C.S. Relyea of Atlantic, Iowa; Miss Elizabeth Walpole of Storm Lake, Iowa and Julia, Mrs. W.H. Irving of Atlantic, Iowa.

Mr. Walpole had attained the age of 73 years and 10 months at the time of his passing. He has lived in Rock Valley for many years, having been a stock buyer here for years and afterwards operating the Walpole Filling Station.

Funeral services were held in St. Mary’s Church at Rock Valley, Monday , morning at 9 o’clock and interment was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
