Lawrie Kelderman, age 71 of Doon, Iowa died Tuesday at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls following a stroke. Memorial services were held Thursday at Christian Reformed Church in Rock Rapids with Rev. Cliff Hoekstra as officiant. Private interment was held prior to the memorial service.
Lawrie William Kelderman was born March 31, 1931 at Hartford, S. D., the son of Helry and Tena (Drost) Kelderman. He grew up near Doon, attending country school school near Doon, then Doon Christian School and finally Doon Public School. On Feb. 8 1952 he was united in marriage to Delphine Van Engen at Doon Christian Reformed Church. Following their marriage they farmed in the Doon area. In addition to farming he also drove truck for Lem's Auto Recycler's for approximately 20 years. His family remembers that for the first ten years of trucking Lawrie considered it his job to drive truck and for the next ten year of trucking it was his hobby to drive. During the years on the road Lawrie developed many friendships and was known as a driver with a great sense of direction and a keen memory for pickup and drop sites. Lawrie has been a lifelong member of the Christian Reformed Church for the past six years he belonged to the Christian Reformed Church in Rock Rapids. He also served for a while on the Board of Education at the Doon Christian School. During his life he suffered a series of strokes and on Sept. 24 suffered a massive stroke at home.
After being taken to the hospital in Sioux Center he was transferred to Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls where he underwent surgery. In spite of the medical efforts made, Lawrie was not able to recover from the stroke and died.
Surviving is his wife of fifty years, Delphine of Doon, three sons and their wives: Dennis (Marsha) Kelderman of Doon, Eric (Renae) Kelderman of Council Bluffs, IA, and Aaron (Lavonne) Kelderman of Doon; two daughters: Pat Dolieslager of Sioux Center, IA, Tami and her husband Kevin Tommeraasen of Baltic, S.D. and daughter-in-law Marge (Doug) DeBoer of Sioux Center. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, along with 2 brothers, Don and Alvin Kelderman, both of Doon; six sisters, Wilma Flynn of Whittier, CA, Caroline Shutter of Moreno Valley CA, Tena Gorter of Luverne, MN, Jeanette Lems of Doon, and Priscilla Spykeboer and Willmanette ???? not part of obit in newspaper.
