From the Alton Democrat, January 26, 1934, Hospers news:

John Van Rennes, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Van Rennes, Sr., was killed Saturday evening at 8:00 o’clock near Vermillion, S.D., while doing some trucking to Sioux City. He was 30 years, 8 months and 13 days of age.

John was born in Renkum, Netherlands, on May 7, 1903. He is survived by his parents and by three brothers and four sisters, as follows—Richard, living in California; Elizabeth, Margaret, Nellie, Anthony, Henry and Reks, all at home.

When he settled near Sioux Center. [line missing?] John also came to America with the family. They lived at Orange City a few years but his home at present was at Tripp, S.D., having moved there from Avon, S.D., about two years ago. He was preceded by one sister in the Netherlands to Eternity.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:00 o’clock in the home and at 1:30 in the First Reformed church, with Rev. M. A. Stegeman conducting the services. Interment was at the cemetery west of Hospers.

A brief note on his death in the Hawarden Independent (Feb. 1, 1934, p. 7) says that he was hauling livestock to Sioux City from Tripp, S.D., when his truck turned over.

RESEARCH NOTES

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Van Rennes, John, b. 1903, d. 24 Jan 1934, son, Hospers Cem, Hospers IA. [but if he died on Saturday this would have been January 20] The South Dakota Death Index on Ancestry.com shows John Van Rennes with a death date of 20 Jan 1934.

The 1925 Iowa state census shows his parents as Henry Van Rennes and Elizabeth Heemsbergen or Van Heemsbergen.

FindaGrave.com shows him with his parents (and with a photo of his headstone, which just gives his birth and death years), and with a spouse, Coba Jeanette Van’t Hull (later Vande Garde), 1911-1998. It says they were married October 27, 1927 in Sheldon, Iowa, and were the parents of Muriel J., born 1929.

The 1930 U.S. census shows John, Coba J., Muriel J., and his father-in-law, Dries Van’t Hull, living in Hull, where he is an odd jobs laborer. He immigrated in 1919 and is naturalized.

A birth record on WieWasWie.nl shows Jan Van Rennes; parents Johannes Bernardus Hendrikus van Rennes, a factory worker, and Elisabeth Heemsbergen; born 7 May 1903 in Renkum, Gelderland.

Their marriage record on Ancestry.com shows John Rennes, residence Sioux Center, a farmer, age 25 next birthday, born in Ada, Netherlands, parents Henry Rennes and Elisabeth Heemsbergen; bride Coba Jeannette Van’t Hull, residence Hull, Iowa, age 18 next birthday, born in Doon, Iowa, parents Dries Van’t Hull and Fannie Van Berkam; married October 27, 1927, in Sheldon.
