From the Sioux Center News, November 9, 1933, Hull news:

John Mulder, who has been a patient at the hospital several weeks with cancer of the bowel, passed away Friday at midnight. His funeral was held Monday at the First Reformed Church and burial took place in the Hope cemetery.

Mr. Mulder would have been 75 years old in March. He arrived in America from the Netherlands in 1891. His wife preceded him in death by six weeks.

From the Alton Democrat, November 10, 1933, Hull news:

John Mulder died at the local hospital Friday night, suffering from cancer of the bowels. He had been a patient for three weeks and the cancer had progressed too far for an operation. He was 74 years, 8 months and eight days old and is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Ed Korthals (Grace) of Matlock; Mrs. Henry Korthals (Lina) from Dakota. Jennie and Herman preceded their father in death, his wife also passing away about forty days ago.

Funeral services were held Monday from the 1st Ref. church. Burial was made at Hope cemetery. Mr. Mulder was one of the old-time residents of Hull.

John Mulder Died Friday; Buried Monday Afternoon

John Mulder, who had been a patient in the Hull Hospital for several weeks, suffering with cancer, died Friday night. Mr. Mulder was seventy-five years old. His wife preceded him in death last September 20th. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Henry Korthals of White Lake, South Dakota, and Mrs. Gerrit Korthals of George, Iowa, and twenty two grandchildren.

The funeral was held Monday from the home and from the First Reformed Church, of which he was a devout member. Rev. G. H. Douwstra had charge of the services. The Index wishes to join the many friends of the family in extending sincere sympathy.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Mulder, John, born 7 Mar 1858, died 3 Nov 1933, Hope Cemetery, Hull IA.

His death certificate adds his wife’s name, Jantje Mulder; parents’ names not known to the informant, Grace Korthals; died at 12:15 a.m. November 3, 1933; cause, “obstruction bowel,” onset 10/10/33; contributory cause, carcinoma rectum, onset 1930.

FiindaGrave.com has John “Jan” Mulder, born 7 March 1858 at Gasselte, Aa en Hunze Municipality, Drenthe, Netherlands; wife Jantje Vos Mulder (1866-1933, married 1888); children Lina Mulder Korthals (1889-1961), Grace Mulder Korthals (1892-1945), Herman Mulder (1894-1918), and Jennie Mulder (1901-1919).

The 1900 U.S. census shows the family living in Welcome Township, Sioux County, where he is a farmer; he is naturalized; he, Jantje, and Lina immigrated in 1891.

In birth and marriage indexes for his children on Ancestry.com, he is variously called John and Jan.

A sale advertisement by the administrator of the Mulders’ estate lists their major household possessions (Sioux County Index, November 17, 1933, p. 8).
