Herman Toering was born on April 28, 1863 in Workum, Friesland, the Netherlands. He passed away on Friday evening at the Doornink Hospital in Orange City after two days illness. He had attained the age of 78 years, 4 months and 7 days.

He was married to Engeltje Vander Laan on May 30, 1888 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

At the age of seventeen Mr. Toering began his work in the printing trade in Bolsward, The Netherlands, later going to Gravenhage and Amsterdam. He followed this same occupation for almost sixty-one years.

In 1901 he and his family came to this country settling in Rock Valley. A year and half later they came to Orange City where they resided since. He began work immediately as printer for the newly established weekly Dutch paper De Vrije Hollander. After the death of the editor, M.D. Van Oosterhout. Mr. Toering became editor and publisher of that paper.

In 1919 the Democratic administration under President Wilson appointed Mr. Toering as postmaster at Orange City which position he filled for over 8 years. From that time until the day of his death he served as editor, assistant editor and local editor of De Volksvriend.

After retiring from active printing work he and his wife spent several winters in California.

He was president of the Orange City Cemetery Association. For many years he was a strong supporter of the Democratic party and served for many years as county committeeman in that party.

He is survived by his widow and one daughter, Hendrika, Mrs. Tony de Haas, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p. m. Monday at the home and 1:30 at the American Reformed Church. Reverend L. Nattress officiated. Interment was at the Orange City Cemetery.

Out of town relatives and friends who attended the services were Chris Vander Laan of Hull, Mr. and Mrs. Herman De Haas and family of Rolla, Missouri, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Jacobs, Mrs. Herman Jacobs, Miss Margaret Hilton, Mrs. Gerrit Ver Meulen, Mrs. Herman Vander Well of Maurice, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Van Foeken of Artesia, California, Mr. and Mrs. F. Tilstra and Mrs. William Van Foeken of Rock Rapids, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Vander Laan and son and Miss Sue Vander Laan of Omaha.
