Born: February 14, 1831
Died: January, 1894John J. Tibbels, one of the pioneers of this portion of Iowa, died at this home in the north side last Friday morning, after an illness of a couple of months form a complication of la grippe and lung trouble.
The deceased was born in Athens County Ohio, February 14, 1831. He came to this part of Iowa 23 years and has been a continuous resident of the Sioux Valley ever since. He was married to Margaret Tibbels. He engaged in the mercantile business for a brief period in the early part of the 70's and later took a homestead a few miles southwest of here in Union County, South Dakota, following the occupation of a farmer for several years. He still retained his old homestead at the time of his death. After proving up he returned to the north side and again engaged in the mercantile business, and held the position of agent for the Milwaukee Company and the position of postmaster for several years. He retired from active business a number of years ago.
John Tibbles was a man of strict integrity and was the respected friend of all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. His kindly manner and familiar face will be sadly missed by the entire community.
