John Vreugdenhil, age 82, of Sioux Center, IA died Thursday, May 23, 2019, at the Royale Meadows Care Center of Sioux Center.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00AM Saturday, May 25th at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center with Reverend John Lee officiating.

A prayer service for family and friends will be held on Saturday at 10:00AM at the Bethel Christian Reformed Church of Sioux Center. Interment will follow the prayer service in Memory Gardens Cemetery of Sioux Center.

Visitation will be held on Friday, May 24th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM with family present at the Memorial Funeral Home of Sioux Center.

Memorials can be directed to the Bethel Lighthouse or Sioux County Hospice.

John Cornelius Vreugdenhil son of Case & Betsy (Kersbergen) Vreugdenhil was born January 17, 1937, in Sioux Center, Iowa. John had four older sisters. He spent his early childhood, living in Lebanon, Iowa, and going to the Lebanon Christian Grade School. When John was nine years old, his family moved to Sioux Center. He attended Sioux Center Christian Grade School and then graduated from Western Christian High school. From 1958 to 1964, John was in the 185th Air National Guard Unit. After high school, John worked as a Carpenter and at Koster’s Mfg in Sioux Center.

John married Sharon (Den Herder) on March 26, 1958. They were blessed with four children. Doug, Leanne, Randy and Mike.

In 1963, John started Vreugdenhil Construction and stayed involved with the company for many years, even after he retired. He enjoyed doing skid loader work, fixing tools and helping wherever he could. His family and many of those he worked with, affectionately referred to him as “Pops”.

John was a member of Bethel CRC where he served on the Council and other various committees, along with serving on the Sioux Center Christian School Board. Each year, for over 20 years, John and Sharon would go to Mississippi for the Justice for All.

John was known for being a generous, kind-hearted and quiet man, who led by example. His family having a Christian upbringing was very important to him.

John is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sharon Vreugdenhil of Sioux Center; son: Doug & Valerie (Obbink) Vreugdenhil; daughter: Leanne & Dave Van Holland; sons: Randy & Brenda (Noteboom) Vreugdenhil; Mike & Karen (Wieringa) Vreugdenhil all of Sioux Center. 14 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; siblings; Verna Baker of Michigan and Arlene Altena of South Dakota; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his sisters; Joanne Vreugdenhil and Marie Kiel and brothers-in-law, Howard Kiel and Ralph Baker.
