Cyrene Starkenburg Reached Age Of 15 Years

Cyrene Starkenburg, 15 year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. John and Lydia (Van Otterloo) Starkenburg of Alton died Friday February 1 at eleven o'clock p.m. after only a few hours illness.

The boy attended school as usual but at six in the evening complained of a headache, which grew in intensity until he lost consciousness. He was revived however, and his condition was not considered serious until he suffered a second attack. The third attack, believed to result from a brain hemorrhage and heart leakage, proved fatal in spite of all that medical aid could do.

Dr. Grossmann was called in the absence of Dr. Murphy, and Henry Fennema was with the family all evening faithfully aiding to carry out the doctor’s instructions.

Cyrene Alvin Starkenburg was born in Alton September 3, 1930 and attended school here all his life, being a member of the sophomore class this year. He joined in the usual sports and was a substitute pin setter at the bowling alley. He was well liked by his schoolmates.

Friends and neighbors, greatly shocked by the boy’s sudden passing, have done all the possible to comfort the bereaved family.

Surviving besides his parents are an older sister, Angeline, and younger brother and sister, Leo and Lois, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. S.J. Starkenburg of Bellflower, California, who arrived Tuesday morning.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Second Christian Reformed Church Orange City, where Cyrene was baptised and attended services.

Reverend R. De Groot, the pastor, was in charge and schoolmates were pallbearers. Beautiful music was furnished by Alton High School mixed chorus and many lovely flowers testified to the high regard felt for the boy and his family. Interment was in the Orange City Cemetery.

Near relatives at the service besides the immediate family and grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Van Otterloo of Orange City, Mr. and Mrs. William Dolieslager of Le Mars, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Van Otterloo, Orange City; Messrs. and Mesdames Emmet Root, William Brower, Fred and Will Starkenburg and their families, besides many friends from neighboring towns.
