Death of John B. Richter

John B. Richter passed away in the hospital at Cherokee, Iowa, last Thursday. He had been taken there for treatment a few weeks earlier. He had not been in good health since he became overheated about two months ago.

Mr. Richter was born near Rock Valley in May, 1890, and was past forty-three years of age at the time of his death. Practically all his life was spent in this vicinity and he was well known here. He had the respect of all who knew him.

Mr. Richter leaves four sisters and two brothers besides other relatives in Rock Valley and vicinity. His sisters are Julia Richter of Rock Valley; Mrs. Rosmuller of Burlington, Wis.; Mrs. Clarence Ogden of Lennox, S.D.; and Mrs. Henry Koltze of Minneota, Minnesota. The brothers are: Al Richter, Rock Valley and Lawrence Richter who lives near Hudson. All of whom were present at the funeral services.

Funeral services were held in St. Mary’s Church in Rock Valley Saturday morning and the remains were taken to St. Mary’s Cemetery.

RESEARCH NOTES

Other news notes in area newspapers show him having been adjudged insane and taken to Cherokee for treatment at the end of June, after having suffered sunstroke.

His death certificate has John B. Richter, single, resident of Rock Valley; occupation, laborer; born May 5, 1892 in Rock Valley; parents John Richter and Mary Swayer, both born in Burlington, Wisconsin; died in the Cherokee State Hospital, where had been for 2 months and 5 days, at 4:00 a.m. August 31, 1933; cause, suicide by strangulation, hanging by a shoestring on the foot of bed; contributory cause, psychosis with other somatic diseases.

An entry in the Iowa Births and Christenings Index on Ancestry.com shows John Richter, born in Rock Valley 5 May 1890, parents John Richter and Mary. The 1900 U.S. census for Rock Township, showing him (age 10) with his parents John (a farmer) and Mary Richter and several siblings, also says he was born in May 1890.

His World War I draft registration card gives his full name as John Bernard Richter and gives his birth date as May 5, 1891 in Rock Valley; a farmer, employed by John Richter of Rock Valley; medium height and build, black eyes, dark brown hair.
