Matilda Alons, age 95, of Sanborn, Iowa, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2019 at Prairie View Home in Sanborn.

Funeral Services will be Monday, April 15, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. at Cornerstone United Reformed Church in Sanborn, Iowa. Rev. Daniel Donovan officiating.

Burial to follow at Roseland Cemetery in Sanborn, Iowa.

Visitation will be Sunday, April 14, from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. with the family present from 2:00 to 3:30 P.M. at Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service in Sheldon.

Grace Matilda Alons was born on June 4, 1923, at Boyden, Iowa. She was the daughter of John and Johanna (Rutgers) Donkersloot. In 1928 she moved with her family to a farm northwest of Sanborn. She lived there until she got married. Matilda attended a rural school, and then went to Sanborn Public School for 3 years of high school and graduated from Western Christian Academy in Hull in 1939. She attended Northwestern Junior College in Orange City for two years and received a 5-year teaching certificate. Matilda taught in two country schools and Sheldon Christian School.

On June 20, 1946, she was united in marriage to Daniel Alons at the Sanborn Christian Reformed Church. After their marriage, they moved to a farm 5 miles west of Sanborn. In 1955, they bought a farm 9 miles northwest of Sanborn. They always continued to make Sanborn their home town. They moved to the Manor in March, 2016, and into Prairie View in January, 2018.

Matilda was a member of Sanborn Cornerstone United Reformed Church. Over the years Matilda taught Sunday School, faithfully attended Ladies Aid, and was a Calvinettes counselor for 25 years. She was a Crossroads Prison Instructor for 15 years. Over the years Dan and Matilda went on several short mission trips. Matilda belonged to Prairie View Ladies Auxiliary and also worked at the Village Treasure Chest for over 25 years.

She enjoyed gardening, sewing, baking, quilting, reading and cooking. Her children and grandchildren enjoyed her delicious cinnamon rolls as well as many other people. She enjoyed entertaining and having family over for Sunday dinners.

Matilda and Dan loved having the grandchildren over to play board games. Her greatest joy is having her children and families walk in the ways of the Lord.

She passed away on Friday, April 12, 2019 at Prairie View Home in Sanborn.

Dan and Matilda were blessed with 5 children: Judith (Loren) Van Duyn of Liberty, MO, Kenneth (Brenda) of Valley Springs, SD, Lois (Larry) Postma of Sheldon, IA, Myrna Roder (fiancé Jerry Breuker) of Arnold's Park, IA, and Norma (Randy) Geels of Sioux Center, IA; 17 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Matilda is also survived by one brother: Marvin and his wife Luann Donkersloot of Sheldon, IA; and sister-in-law: Marie Donkersloot of Worthington, MN.

Matilda was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Ray and his wife Alyda Donkersloot, Henry and his wife Bernice Donkersloot, Al Donkersloot; sisters: Gert Donkersloot, Gladys and her husband Earl Elgersma; son-in-law: Allen Roder; and a grandson: Calvin Geels.
