RESEARCH NOTES

There appears to be no Rock Valley newspaper for this period. She is not listed in the Sioux County Cemetery Index.

Mrs. Kleinjan seems to be Nellie Niemantsverdriet, who married Floris Kleinjan in 1891 (marriage license announcement in the Alton Democrat, Feb. 14, 1891).

The Clou van de Lagendijk Genealogy (public family tree on Ancestry.com) has Floris Kleinjan (1853-1936), with spouse Pieternella Niemantsverdriet (1956-1900). Her parents were Leendert Niemantsverdriet (1822-1897) and Lena Kleijnjan (1834-1921). The entry for Leendert Niemantsverdriet says that he died 2 Nov. 1897 in Hull. Pieternella is the only child listed. No sources are given for this data. However, other records confirm this relationship.

A brief obituary for Leendert (posted separately) refers to his daughter, Mrs. F. Kleinjan, living near Hull.

The Iowa Deaths and Burials Index on Ancestry.com has Nellie Kleinjan. age 44, born 1856 in the Netherlands, died in Rock Township, Sioux County, 7 Jan 1900.

The 1900 U.S. census for Rock Township, Sioux County (June 1900) has Florris Kleinjahn, age 45, born in Holland, a widower, married 8 years, a farmer, immigrated in 1887; daughters Martie (7) and Nellie (2), and son Paul (5).

Ancestry.com has an Iowa delayed birth certificate for Martha Kleinjan, born July 4, 1892 in Orange City, parents Florus Kleinjan and Nellie Niemantsverdriet, both born in Holland.

The 1870 U.S. census for Summit Township (post office Pella), Marion County, Iowa, has Leendert NiemantsVerdriet (49), a farmer, with wife Lena (36), daughter Peetje (14), and son Paul (8), all born in the Netherlands. Pieternella/Pietje was not located in the 1880 census, but she is not listed with her parents and brother, who are living in Orange City.
