Herman Dittmer Rites

Funeral services for Herman Dittmer, who died October 15, were held at St. John’s Lutheran church in Ireton October 18. Rev. C. D. Eifert was in charge. Interment was in the Ireton cemetery.

Herman John Dittmer, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Dittmer, was born January 21, 1894, in Ireton. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in infancy and was confirmed at the age of 15 years. During the past years he was hospitalized.

Survivors are one brother, Louis Dittmer of Hawarden, and one sister, Mrs. Amanda Matneuffel of Sacred Heart, Minn.

From the Alton Democrat, November 7, 1946, Ireton news:

Henry Dittmer

Funeral services were held for Herman John Henry Dittmer, hospitalized for the past ten years at the State Hospital at Cherokee and who died Oct. 15. Services were conducted Oct. 18 at the St. John’s Lutheran church where the deceased was a member in his youth. Serving as pall bearers were Messrs. Orville Mueller, Edw. Heidbrink, Milton Dittmer, Oscar Heidbrink, Delbert Dittmer and Elmer Franke.

Immediate relatives include Mrs. Amanda Van Tauffel of Sacred Heart, Minn. and a brother Louis of Hawarden. The departed had attained the age of 52 years. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery.

The Sioux Center News, October 24, 1946 also has an announcement of his death, referring to him as Harry Dittmer, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Dittmer. It spells his sister’s surname Mantauffel.

There is another brief announcement of his death in the Hawarden Independent, Oct. 17, 1946, also calling him Harry Dittmer of Ireton, died at Cherokee. It spells his sister’s surname Manteusffel.

His FindaGrave page has him as Herman Dittmer, born 1894, died 1946, buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Ireton, with a photo of his headstone. No family listed.

The 1925 Iowa state census shows his parents as J. Fred Dittmer and Anna Merhoff.

His World War I draft registration card has him as Herman H. Dittmer; occupation farmer, employed by father and self; medium height and build, dark blue eyes, light brown hair.
