From the Hawarden Independent, March 7, 1946:

John Doohen, 85, a resident of Hawarden since 1939, passed away at his home at 11:40 o’clock Saturday morning [March 2]. Mr. Doohen had been in failing health for the past six months.

Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s church in this city at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning with Rev. R. Graff in charge. His remains were then taken to Garryowen, S.D. for burial in St. Mary’s cemetery there.

John Doohan, son of Patrick and Katherine Doohen, was born on June 25, 1860, in Newark, N. J. In 1869, he came to Burbank, S.D. with his parents, who homesteaded near there. For 70 years, he lived on this farm. In 1939, he came to Hawarden, when his sons engaged in business here.

He was united in marriage with Nora Elizabeth Conran of Chicago in 1901. To this union were born six children. He is survived by his wife and the following children: William, John, Alex and Nora Doohen and Mrs. Wendell Shouse of Hawarden and Mrs. John Rabusch of Vermillion, S.D., and six grandchildren. He was the last member of his family.

Just before coming to Hawarden, Mr. Doohen submitted to an operation on his eyes, after which he lost his sight. This was a sore affliction for him and he found it hard to adjust himself in new surroundings. Exactly three years ago to the day, Mr. Doohen’s father-in-law, Massey Conran, who lived in the same house, passed away. Mr. Conran was also blind for a number of years.
