MRS. FRANK C. BALLARD PASSED AWAY AT ALBANY, OREGON, LAST THURSDAY

Mrs. Frank C. Ballard, a former well known resident of Hawarden died at her home in Albany, Oregon, shortly before 11 o’clock Thanksgiving night, according to word reaching Hawarden friends. She had been in failing health for the past several months.

Funeral services were held at Albany Saturday afternoon and interment was made at that place.

Almira Ballard came to Hawarden with her family about 1896 and they made their home in this city until 1910, when Mr. and Mrs. Ballard joined with a considerable group of Hawarden people in locating on claims in Montana near the present town of Geraldine. That part of Montana was then very sparsely settled and their claims were located forty miles from the nearest railroad point. During their first few years in Montana they endured many privations common to the settlement of a new country. Continued droughts convinced them that they had made an unhappy choice of a new home and about 1920 they left their Montana claim and moved on to Albany, Oregon, where they have since been happily located. Mrs. Ballard was close to 80 years of age and during the past year she and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

During her residence in Hawarden, Almira Ballard took a prominent part in the church, civic and social life of the community and still had many friends here who learned of her death with regret.

She is survived by her husband and three daughters: Mrs. D.E. Brinskill and Mrs. Erma Hogge of Albany, Oregon and Mrs. A.C. Schoeneman of Sioux Falls.
