He was a son of Joseph Elmer Akin, 1840-1933 and Lucy M. (Clough) Akin, 1845-1928 (obituaries posted separately). Their obituaries say a son, Willie or William, passed away at the farm home [near Rock Valley] on 4 August 1888.

No reference to his death was found in local newspapers. He does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index. However, he appears in the Iowa Gravestones Photo Project as Willie E. Akin, son of J. E. and Lucy M. Akin, buried in Valley View Cemetery, Rock Valley, with a photo of his headstone. FindaGrave.com also has a page for him, with a transcription of his headstone giving his age as 18 yrs 8 mos.

The 1880 U.S. census shows the family living on a farm in Bath Township, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa: Akin, J. E. (38), Lucy M. (35), Evaline (10), William (8), and Edith (7). (Bath Township is just north of the village of Rockwell, where his parents’ obituaries say they lived for a time before coming to Sioux County.)
