Gregory Schumacher, 92, of Beresford, formerly of Alcester, died Thursday, January 23, 1997, at Bethesda Nursing Home in Beresford.

Services were at 10:30 A.M., Monday January 27, at St. Mary’ s Catholic Church at Hawarden. Burial was in Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Visitation was from 11:00 A.M. to 5 P.M., Sunday, January 26, at the Wass Funeral Home at Alcester, with a wake service at 7 P.M. at the Church.

Mr. Schumacher was born October 30, 1904 at Hawarden. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic Grade School. The oldest of eight children, he stayed home to help on the farm. He married Elizabeth Starzl on November 27, 1928, at Emerson, Nebraska. The couple farmed near Hawarden until 1934, when they moved to a farm west of Alcester. He was also an area seed corn dealer for many years. Following their retirement in 1968, they moved into Alcester. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Hawarden and was a lifelong member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Survivors include two sons, Robert of Beresford, Gregory of Alcester; two daughters, Mrs. Pete (Bernadine) Bishop of Lexington, Nebraska and Mrs. Paul (Patricia) Wolf of Pella; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
