MRS. B. A. WALRATH DIED WEDNESDAY MORNING

Word was received in Rock Valley Wednesday morning of the sudden death of Mrs. B. A. Walrath at her home in Sioux City. She had not been well for a few weeks past, but her condition was not considered dangerous. Wednesday morning she suffered a heart attack and passed away shortly afterwards.

The Walrath family formerly lived in Rock Valley for many years before moving to Sioux City to make their home and they are well known here.

The remains of Mrs. Walrath were taken to Blairsburg, Iowa, her childhood home, for funeral services and burial. The many friends of the family in Rock Valley extend sincere sympathy.

From the Alton Democrat, March 31, 1933, Rock Valley news:

A message was received here Wednesday advising us of the death of Mrs. B. A. Walrath, a former Rock Valleyite, member of the Methodist church, a teacher in the Sunday school, a member of the Missionary society and Ladies Aid. The family moved to Sioux City about sixteen years ago.

She leaves to mourn her passing her husband B. A. Walrath, two daughters, Mrs. E. W. Yale and Miss Catherine Walrath of Sioux City, three sisters, W. L. Bradford of Waterloo, Mrs. C. S. Bronson, Blairsburg, and Miss Melda Davenport of Newcastle, Pa.; two brothers, John Davenport of Mason City and J. A. Davenport of Blairsburg, Ia.

Mrs. Walrath was born at Sharon, Pa., February 3, 1871, and had reached the age of 62 years, 1 month and 19 days when she passed away with heart disease after a three weeks illness. Interment took place at Blairsburg in the family burial plot.

Her death certificate adds her husband’s name, Burton A. Walrath; residence 3426 Jennings Street, Sioux City, resident of Sioux City for 16 years; died at 10:45 a.m. March 22, 1933; cause, chronic myocarditis.

FindaGrave.com has her as Jennie Nancy Davenport Walrath; born in Pennsylvania; parents John Davenport (1838-1905) and Mary Brown Davenport (1840-1918); three siblings listed: H. G. H. Davenport (1866-1902), Joseph Arthur Davenport (1876-1958), and Lou Melda Davenport (1883-1974); spouse Burton A. Walrath (1867-1946); children Faye W. Walrath Yale (1894-1961) and Kathryn Marlys Walrath (1916-1963).

The marriage register for Hamilton County, Iowa, 1892/1893 has groom B. A. Walrath, age 26, residence Blairsburg, Iowa, occupation furniture dealer, born in Illinois, parents Geo Walrath and Eliz McCoy; bride Jennie Davenport, age 23, resident of Blairburg, born in Penn[sylvania], parents John Davenport and Mary Brown; married in Webster City, Iowa, June 14, 1893.

The 1900 U.S. census shows Bert and Jennie Walrath and daughter Fay (5, born July 1894) living in Rock Valley, where he is a blacksmith. In 1910 they are still in Rock Valley; he is an engineer on a steam sheller[?]. They and daughter Kathryn are in Sioux City in 1920 and 1930, where he works as a factory (1920) and YWCA (1930) engineer.
