From the Alton Democrat, August 10, 1928, Rock Valley news:

A Van Duyn of Colton, S.D., formerly of Rock Valley, passed away last Tuesday. Mr. Van Duyn was 85 years of age and the father of Lane Van Duyn of near this city.

From the Rock Valley Bee, August 3, 1928:

A. Van Duyn, of Colton, S.D., a former resident of this vicinity, died Tuesday evening [July 31], according to a message received by relatives here. Mr. Van Duyn was eighty-four years old.

RESEARCH NOTES

The South Dakota Historical Society Cemetery Records Index shows Adolph Van Duyn, died 1928, buried in the Colton Cemetery.

U.S. census entries show Adolph Van Duyn or Van Duijn, born May 1844 in the Netherlands, immigrated 1881, naturalized, a farmer, living in Garfield Township, Sioux County; wife Nellie or Neeltje, also born in the Netherlands, nee Doorduin, immigrated 1885; children Louis, Maggie, and Elizabeth. Per the 1910 census, Nellie was his second wife. See Nellie’s obituary, posted separately, for additional information.

The Iowa state census for 1825 shows his parents as Lane Van Duyn and Elizabeth Burga.

WieWasWie.nl has a birth index entry for Adolf van Duin, born 17 May 1845 in Monster, Zuid-Holland; parents Leendert van Duin and Elisabeth Burger. It shows him (age 23) marrying Neeltje van Geest (age 22), daughter of Lourens van Geest and Maria van der Kooij in Maasland, Zuid-Holland on 14 May 1869. This was presumably his first wife.
