Claus Drewes was born January 21, 1858, at Benwisch, Hanover, Germany, and died at his home in Rock Rapids, Saturday, September 15th. He was baptized in infancy, instructed in the way of salvation and confirmed at Odendorf. Here he was united in marriage to Miss Katharina Elsen of Cottenberge. For 23 years the departed worked in a cement factory. In 1907 they emigrated to America and settled near Hull, Sioux County, where they farmed 10 years. They lived on a farm near St. Paul’s Lutheran Church near Hull, six years. Two years ago last spring they retired from life and moved to Rock Rapids. While living in Sioux County, he was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and while in Rock Rapids he was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He is survived and his death is mourned by his bereaved widow, his children, Mrs. Anna Schlichtmann in Germany; George , of near Rock Rapids; Mrs. Johanns Lafrenz, of near Rock Rapids; Mrs. Meta Riebeling, of near Hull; Mrs. Betti Butt, in Germany; Mrs. Marie Mueller, of Gaylord, Minnesota; Mrs. Sophie Stoehr, of near Hull; 32 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. One son, Herman, died in Germany at the age of 7 years.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 18th, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, and were in charge of the pastor, Reverend E.H. Mueller and at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, near Hull, where Reverend E. Goeringer, his former pastor, preached the sermon. Interment was made in St. Paul’s Cemetery.
