Mrs. Martha Van Surksum, age 82, of Hull, passed away on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at the Royale Meadows Care Center in Sioux Center.

There will be a memorial service on Monday, October 29, at 2:30pm, at the Doon United Reformed Church. The Rev. John Vermeer will officiate. Interment will be prior to the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. There will be a family prayer service on Monday, at 1:15pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Visitation with the family will be on Sunday, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, at the funeral home.

Martha Jane was born on February 19, 1936, in Sacramento, California, the daughter of William David and Martha (De Jager) Bliek. She was raised mostly in Iowa, where she went to school in Hudson.

On December 2, 1955, she married John LeRoy Van Surksum in Hull. They started their family in Iowa. In 1968, they moved to a farm in Minnesota and returned to Iowa in 1973. She had many occupations in the course of her lifetime. Most of her free time and her true passion was helping others with the use of nutrition and healthy lifestyle alternatives.

She had many other interests, including arts, crafts, cooking, and baking. Jane was most content gardening on their acreage with John.

John passed away on April 26, 2010, in Hull, after more than 54 years of marriage,

In 2014, Mrs. Van Surksum became a resident of Royale Meadows.

Martha was a member of the United Reformed Church.

Survivors include her three children, Edwin Van Surksum, of Los Angeles, California; Douglas Van Surksum, and his wife, Joleen, of Hull; and Jana Van Surksum, of Trabuco, California; two grandchildren, Tara and Colton Van Surksum, three great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Roy Bliek, Betty Darnell, and William Bliek.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Bonnie Purcell.
