Mr. Fred Boogerd, age 80, of Hull, passed away on Wednesday, March 25, 2009, at the Sanford Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, March 28, at 1:30pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. The Reverend Paul Hansen will officiate. Interment will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Hull. Visitation with the family present will be on Friday, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, at the Church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Fred was born on June 13, 1928, at Lebanon, the son of Bartel and Minnie (De Jong) Boogerd. He was raised in Hull.

On November 8, 1955, he married Jeanette Lockhorst in Ireton. They made their home in Hull, except from 1981 to 1991, when they lived in Lennox, South Dakota. He was first a welder and then became a foreman at Koyker Manufacturing in Hull and Lennox. For the past few months, he lived at care centers in Rock Rapids and Hull.

Fred was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Hull, where he served as an elder and attended the Men's Society. He was very active in the Hull Cadets, serving as head counselor.

He also belonged to the Wegman-Koele American Legion Post in Hull. He enjoyed camping and spending time with his family, especially attending his grandchildren's music and sporting events.

Survivors include his wife of more than 53 years; two daughters and their husbands, Rhonda and Dwayne Bonestroo, of Hull; and Debra and Dale Schmidt, of Sheldon; a son and his wife, Daryl and Sherri Boogerd, of Sheldon; nine grandchildren and their spouses, Bruce Bonestroo, Tara and Kevin Vonk, Leah and Brent Mulder, Linda and Deric Bootsma, Laura Schmidt, Lynae Schmidt, Kristin Haakinson, Alec and Chelsea Rector, and Jordan Rector; four great-grandchildren, Sam and Tessa Vonk, Peyton Haakinson, and Kinsley Rector; a sister, Fannie Haverhals, of Jenison, Michigan; two brothers and their wives, Marvin and Nelva Boogerd, of Canton, South Dakota; and Bart and Carol Boogerd, of Kentwood, Michigan; and a sister-in-law, Marie Boogerd, of Rock Valley.

He is also survived by Jeanette's family, Priscilla Lockhorst, Adrianna and Darold Bultman, Dorothy and Melvin Hulshof, Don and Deanne Lockhorst, Christina and Garold Cleveringa, Grace and Herm Oldenkamp, and Paul Lockhorst; and many nephews and nieces.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James Boogerd; a brother-in-law, Siebert Haverhals; a sister-in-law, Mazie Boogerd; a niece, Margene Haverhals; his wife's parents, Peter and Christina Lockhorst; two brothers-in-law, Les Webert and Pete Lockhorst; a sister-in-law, Geri Lockhorst; and a niece, Charlotte Lockhorst.
