From the Rock Valley Bee, July 18, 1930:

DEATH OF MRS. ANNA HENNINK

Mrs. Anna Hennink passed away at her home in Rock Valley early Wednesday morning, at the age of eighty years, two months, and twenty one days, her death being due to the natural decline of old age.

Mrs. Hennink was born in Holland April 25, 1850, where she grew to womanhood and was married to Mr. Hennink. She came to this country with her family thirty-six years ago, and most of that time had lived in Rock Valley. She was a woman who was well thought of and respected by all who knew her.

Mrs. Hennink was the mother of three children, Peter, who died two years ago, Jake, who died seven years ago, and John who survives. Her husband died almost eleven years ago.

Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon.

A similar obituary in the Alton Democrat, July 25, 1930, Rock Valley news, adds that funeral services were held at her home, conducted by Rev. G. H. Douwstra of the First Reformed Church at Hull, with burial in the Rock Valley cemetery.

RESEARCH NOTES

Her death certificate shows her as Anna Hennink or Heunink (indexed on Ancestry.com as Heunink); born April 25, 1850 in the Netherlands; father Jake Brauer; mother’s name not known to the informant, Mrs. Jake Hennink; husband “Jake” (no surname); lived in Rock Valley 35 years; died at 9 a.m. July 16, 1930; cause, senility; buried at Rock Valley. [The death certificate recorder evidently became confused with all these Jakes; see below.]

She does not appear in the Sioux County cemetery index.

The Hennink who died eleven years ago was Peter, not Jake. (See his obituary, posted separately, showing the same three sons, plus an unnamed wife.) The 1900 U.S. Census shows Peter Hennink, born Dec. 1845 in Holland, immigrated 1894, farmer, alien, living in Richland Township, Lyon County [just north of Rock Valley] with wife Aantje, born April 1850 in Holland, married 1880, and sons Peter (born Jan. 1876, naturalized) and John (born July 1885). Living next door are newlyweds Jacob and Gertrude Hennink (both born Jan. 1878).

The 1930 census shows her (age 79, widowed) living with Gertrude (age 53, also widowed); their surname is erroneously recorded as what appears to be “Henniels.” The census entry says that she was age 24 at first marriage, suggesting that she was married in about 1874.

A marriage record on WieWasWie.nl shows groom Pieter Hennink, age 30, a bricklayer, born in Winkel, parents Jacob Hennink and Trijntje Nieuweboer; bride Aantje Brouwer, age 23, born in Petten, parents Pieter Brouwer and Guurtje Schotvanger; married 24 January 1874 in Zijpe, Noord-Holland.
