Dick Broek, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Broek who reside on a farm near Alvord, was drowned in Mud Creek near Alvord Saturday evening. With his brother and another young man he started to go in swimming. The creek, while usually quite shallow, was swollen by the recent rains to quite a depth. The young men ran quite a distance when going to the creek and when they arrived they were warm and in no condition to go into the water. The brother of the young man who was drowned went in first, and as soon as he was in the water called for help. Dick went in to help him and so did the other young man who helped him out and then turned his attention to Dick who had apparently been seized with cramps and had gone under. He was drowned in about six feet of water. His body was found shortly afterwards. The deceased was 22 years, six months and five days old. Besides his parents her leaves two brothers and two sisters, he being the oldest of the children. Funeral services were held at Alvord on Tuesday.
