Reverend Carl D. Nuoffer passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Herbert Vander Hamm, southwest of town, Monday, September 9th, at 9:15 P.M. Reverend and Mrs. Nuoffer had made their home with their daughter since early March since their return home from Chicago. His illness of long duration sapped his physical strength and he grew weaker until death claimed him. He was at all times patient in all his sufferings and grateful for every kindness. His was a big life of service and especially the community where he served so long found in him a leader in Christian principles and service. For more than 31 years pastor of St. John’s congregation, he was able to build and mold strong Christian character into hundreds. As a husband and father, friend and neighbor, those splendid qualities were ever pouring forth to make all whom he contacted better. He loved his people and his life was spent in their behalf. His worth was recognized wherever he was known.

Reverend Carl D. Nuoffer was born to his parents, Reverend and Mrs. Jacob Nuoffer, June 5, 1868, at Petersburg, Ohio, where he spent his childhood. He entered college at Milwaukee, Wisconsin, when 14 years old and after three years there he went to Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he again entered college for three years more and later he went to St. Louis, Missouri, where he entered Concordia Seminary from which he was graduated at the age of 23 years. On September 6, 1891, he was ordained and installed at Coon Valley, Sac County, Iowa, where he served as pastor two years. In October, 1893, he accepted a call to Meriden, Iowa, from where he went to Paullina. After serving that charge for 10 years he accepted the call to St. John’s Church in Reading Township, 4 miles east of Ireton, and was installed here October 4, 1903, and also served a congregation at Struble. On December 1, 1934, he resigned his pastorate of St. John’s Church because of his health.

He was united in marriage with Miss Lydia Miessle, May 11, 1892, and to this union were born four children, the eldest surviving birth only a short time. The others with their mother survive him. The children are: Mrs. Norma Vander Hamm, Ireton; Curtis Nuoffer, Chicago; and Miss Lulu Nuoffer of Amboy, Minnesota. He also leaves two grandchildren, Lowell Vander Hamm and Jeanne Nuoffer. He is also survived by one brother, Professor Gottlieb Nuoffer of Fort Wayne, Indiana; one sister, Mrs. Theodore Benecke of Minneapolis, and one step-brother, Reverend Julius Deckman of Cedar Rapids.

Funeral services were held at St. John’s Church last Friday afternoon and interment was made in the cemetery there. Reverend George Steinkamp of Hawarden had charge of the services at the home; Reverend Berner of St. John’s Church, opened the services in the Church. Reverend Steger of Paullina read the obituary and Reverend Torgler of Hinton preached the sermon, taking the text from Revelations 21; 2. Reverend H. W. Krieger of St. Paul’s Church officiated at the grave.

Honorary pallbearers were Reverend Hartmeester of Paullina, Reverend Brawnschweig of Aurelia, Reverend Noack of Remsen, Reverend Steinkamp of Hawarden, and Reverend Otten and Reverend Wehking of Sioux City. About twenty visiting pastors were present to pay their last respects to the departed. Miss Verona Vlotho of Le Mars and Mrs. Walter Vander Hamm sang favorite hymns of the departed.

Beautiful floral offerings and many with wonderful memorial wreaths were contributions of relatives, friends and neighbors which showed the esteem in which he was held.
