Gerrit Jongetjes Dies at the Cherokee Hospital

Funeral services for Gerrit Jongetjes, aged thirty-five years, a son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Jongetjes of north of Hull, who has been a patient at the State Hospital at Cherokee for a long time, were held from the First Reformed church at Hull last Wednesday, Rev. G. H. Douwstra being in charge. Besides his parents Gerrit is survived by one brother and four sisters. Interment was in Hope Cemetery at Hull. Sincere sympathy is extended to the bereaved family.

RESEARCH NOTES

His death certificate gives his birth date as August 15, 1894, in Holland; parents’ names not known to the State Hospital staff; died at 6:45 p.m. January 11, 1930; cause, chronic pulmonary tuberculosis; contributory cause, epileptic psychosis; buried January 15 at Hull.

The 1920 U.S. census for Baker Township, Osceola County, Iowa, shows the family of farmer Henry Jongetjes (52), his wife Gertie (49), children Garret (25), Gertie (21), Herman John (19), William (16), Jennie (12) and Elizabeth (9), immigrated in 1914.

His World War draft registration card shows him born August 15, 1884 in Harderaijk, Holland; residence, Melvin, Iowa; marital status, single; occupation, farming, “can not work much”; medium height, stout, brown eyes, black hair; judged to be “idiot” and “absolutely unfit for military duty”; he signs the form with a mark rather than a signature.

The birth index on WieWasWie.nl shows Gerrit Jongetjes, born in Harderwijk, Gelderland, 15 August 1894; parents Hendrik Jongetjes, farmer, age 27, and Geertje Walter.
