Local man dies after accident
W. H. Johnson passes away in Hospital at Carroll
Auto Hits Ice on Pavement, turns over twice: others in car escape without injury.
W. H. Johnson, a long- time resident of Hawarden passed away in St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll at 2:30 last Friday morning from injuries suffered in an automobile accident near that place on Tuesday afternoon of last week. He suffered a fracture of the spine and internal injuries form which death resulted.

Mr. Johnson had driven to Nevada IA for a load of students attending Oak Hill academy and was on his way home when the accident happened. The car had gone down a hill and struck ice at the foot, causing the driver to lose control of the machine. The automobile led the highway turning over two times and came to rest on the wheels. Mr. Johnson was thrown from the car and was found some distance beyond it. Mr. Johnson was rendered unconscious at the time but t* regained consciousness and conversed with the officers giving them instructions as what to do. His wife was called to his bedside and was with him a little more than a day before his death. Ho was also conscious when she arrived.

The other occupants of the car were Dorothy and Wilbur Finch and Betty White of Hawarden, La Rue Reck of Sioux City, Miss Victoria Larson of Viborg and Miss Lillian Peters, a teacher in Des Moines. These six people escaped with minor cuts and bruises and were able to continue on their way after receiving first aid at Carroll. The body of the car was badly dented and broken but the engine was not damaged.

His remains arrived in Hawarden on the early Saturday morning North Western train. Funeral service was held at the Seventh Day Adventist church at 2:30 Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. E. T. Gackenheimer, pastor of the Seventh Day Adventist church in Sioux City, in charge. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery

William Henry Johnson was born to Abraham and Sophia Johnson Jan. 31, 1878 at 'Lennox, S. D., and passed away Dec. 20, 1941, at Carroll, la. He was almost 64 years of age at the time of his death. When he was a young man the family moved onto a farm six miles northwest of Hawarden and this was his home until manhood. 'He attended the local rural school and later took some academic work at College View, Nebr.

He was united in marriage with Miss Alice I. Teeple on March 4, 1914, and they made their home on bis homestead near Dunn Center, N. D., for about five years. In March, 1919, he came to Hawarden to assist in the care of his aged father and this city was his home ever since. Three daughters were born to this union, Velma who died before she was three years of age, Lois and Celia. He has also provided for two foster daughters. Betty Lou and Margaret White, in his home for the past five and one half years.

He was ever a busy worker as farmer, salesman, and builder and ready to help those who were in need of assistance. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. James Pember of Pasadena, Calif., and Celia, who is teaching at Harvey, N. D.; one water, Ida Johnson of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Arthur of City Bank, Mont., and George of Gregory, S. D.; one granddaughter, Patricia Ann Pember, four nephews and two nieces. Two sisters and one brother preceded him in death
