James “Jim” Intveld, age 90 of Rock Rapids, IA, died Friday, June 15, 2018 at Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, IA with Rev. Dan Haggar officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverview Cemetery at Rock Rapids, IA.

Visitation will be Tuesday, June 19th from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Jurrens Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.

James Martin Intveld was born April 8, 1928 in Hull, IA, the son of Marinus and Jennie Louise (Vermeer) Intveld. Jim grew up on the family farm and attended Lincoln #4 country school near Hull, IA through the 8th grade. He started farming with his father northwest of Hull. On August 30, 1950, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Buyert. Jim was drafted into the United States Army in February of 1951, when he served his country for two years during the Korean War, serving stateside. Jim and Gert spent the next 43 years together as livestock and grain farmers southeast of Rock Rapids, and in 1995 they moved into Rock Rapids. Jim worked for the Lyon County Fairgrounds for 14 years, and Lewis Family Drug for 13 years, retiring at the age of 87. He and Gert took numerous bus trips and had many memorable times together. In May of 2016, they moved to Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community in Orange City, IA and in October of 2016, they moved to the Good Samaritan Society in George, IA.

Jim was a member of the First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids, where he served as a deacon, elder, and catechism supervisor. He greatly enjoyed working side by side with Gert on the farm. They had a deep love for one another and were inseparable. Jim was a hard-working man, who instilled a strong work ethic in each of his children and grandchildren. His Christian faith was demonstrated through daily Bible devotions, prayer before and after each meal, and faithful worship attendance. He enjoyed playing cards, reading, and watching Twins baseball. Jim always owned John Deere farm equipment. In 1953 he purchased a new John Deere Model “A” tractor which served him for many years. This tractor eventually was restored by his son and later was on loan for more than a year to the John Deere Tractor & Engine Museum in Waterloo, IA. This past Friday evening, Jim died at the Sanford Hospital in Rock Rapids, IA at the age of 90.

James is survived by his wife, Gertrude of Rock Rapids, IA; six children and their families: Dwayne and Martha Intveld of Hazel Green, WI and their children Janna and Scott Kinner, children Hope, Isaac, Caleb and Micah Kinner; Rachel and Mark Larson, child Annika Larson; Joel and Annette Intveld, children Sophie and Tucker Intveld; Bonnie and Everett Van Leeuwen of Orange City, IA and their children, Kyle Van Leeuwen, Brent and Savanah Van Leeuwen, child Madison Van Leeuwen; Nancy and Marvin Vos of Sioux Falls, SD and their children, Tracy and Wade Krzmarzick, children Kadin and Kiley Krzmarzick, and Darin Vos; Marcia Intveld of Elk Point, SD; Donna and Eric Schut of Sioux Center, IA and their child, Alyssa and Arthur Valentine, child Aaron Valentine; and Gary Intveld of Rock Rapids, IA; sister, Margaret Kuiken of Luverne, MN; brother, Leroy and Wanda Intveld of Hull, IA; sister, Thelma and Arnold Menning of Mesa, AZ; brother-in-law, Albert Boeve of Luverne, MN; brother-in-law, John and Peggy Buyert of Plymouth, MN; sister-in-law, Joan Buyert of Hull, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.

James was preceded in death by his parents; siblings and in-laws: Elizabeth and Case Boeve, Cynthia Boeve, Donald Kuiken, Lubertha Buyert, Lillian and Dick Klarenbeek, Barney and Loie Buyert, Arthur Buyert, Hermina and Herbert Vander Stoep, and Gert’s infant twin sister, Dena.
