Mrs. Marie Pilling, age 77, of Orange City, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at the Orange City Area Health System.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, June 18, at 2:00pm, at St. John’s United Church of Christ of Lyman in rural Griswold. The Rev. Mark Andersen will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the St. John’s Cemetery at Lyman.

Visitation will be after 2:00pm on Sunday, with the family present from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Visitation will also be the hour before the service on Monday at the church.

Marie Ann was born on November 17, 1940, near Griswold, the daughter of Chester and Mabel (Rabe) Johnson. She was raised at Prigney and Lyman, where she attended country schools. She graduated from the Griswold High School in 1958.

She then was a waitress at Wyman’s Café, a secretary at the John R. DeWitt Law Office, and the Griswold Telephone Company, all in Griswold. She met Gary Grant Pilling through the telephone office, and they were married on March 21, 1964, at St. John’s Church.

They first made their home in Radcliff, where Chester, Marie, and Gary, built a new home. On May 10, 1969, they moved to Orange City.

She belonged to Century Chapter No. 298 of the Order of the Eastern Star, where she held the office of Ruth for several years. Her favorite star Point. She was also Worthy Matron for two years and held other offices, until the chapter merged with the chapter in Sanborn.

In the early years, Marie enjoyed bowling, camping, and traveling. Later she liked to read and drive her GT Mustang.

Survivors include her husband; a brother and his wife, Wayne and Georgia Johnson, of Lyman; two nephews, Wade Johnson and Clark Johnson, and his wife, Mary, all of Lyman; two grandnephews, Chad Johnson, of Lyman; and Matthew Johnson, and his wife, Amanda, of Scribner, Nebraska; a brother-in-law and his wife, Ned and Mary Pilling, of Henderson, Minnesota; and two nieces-in-law and their husbands, Felica and Mark Ostergaard and Angelia and Steve Degenaar , all of Eagan, Minnesota.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by Gary’s parents, Norris and Grace (Long) Pilling; and a sister-in-law, Dee Johnson.

Memorials may be directed to the Orange City Public Library.
