Cornelius Dodewaard Answers Final Summons

Cornelius Dodewaard, a resident of this vicinity for the passed thirty-eight years, died at his home in Rock Valley last Friday afternoon [October 18], aged seventy-four years, eight months and ten days. Although he had not been well for about five years, having suffered a stroke some years ago, he was not taken dangerously sick until a week before his death, when he suffered a second stroke, and from that time failed gradually until the end came.

Mr. Dodewaard was born in Wadenoigen, Netherlands, February 8, 1855, where he grew to manhood. He was united in marriage March 18, 1889, with Marie Daniels, who survives him. He came with his family to this country in 1891, coming directly to Rock Valley, and has since resided in this vicinity. He was a man who was respected by all who knew him, a kind father and husband and a good neighbor and friend.

Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn, one daughter, Mrs. Dirk Ver Doorn, and three sons, Cornelius, John and Steve, and five grandchildren, all of Rock Valley and vicinity.

Funeral services were held in the First Reformed church in Rock Valley Monday afternoon, in charge of Rev. De Jong, of Rock Rapids, and the remains were taken to Valley View cemetery for burial. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of many friends in their great sorrow.

RESEARCH NOTES

A similar obituary in the Alton Democrat (November 1, 1929, Rock Valley news) adds that he located on a farm in this vicinity where he resided until several years ago when the family moved to Rock Valley; he had been sick about five years and suffered his first stroke about a year ago. It spells his surname both Dodeward and Dodewaard, and a brief death notice in the previous week’s Democrat spells it Doodewaard.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Dodeward, C., b. 1853, d. 1929, Father, Valley View Cem, Rock Valley IA. (This is the surname spelling for other family members in the index, as well.) FindaGrave.com has a photo of his headstone, “Father C. Dodeward 1853-1929.”

His death certificate has Cornielius[sic] Dodeward; born Feb. 8, 1855 in Holland; parents Stephen Dodeward and Jacoba Vander Linden; resident of the U.S. 37 years and of Rock Valley 18 years; occupation, retired farmer; died in Rock Valley at 4:30[?] a.m., October 18, 1929; cause, apoplexy, onset Oct. 11, 1929; buried at Rock Valley Oct. 21.
