VERY SUDDEN DEATH--MRS. HARRY MILLS PASSES AWAY SUNDAY--COMMUNITY GREATLY SHOCKED BY HER SUDDEN DEATH--WAS ILL ONLY A FEW DAYS

Ths community was greatly shocked Sunday evening to learn of the sudden death of Mrs. Harry Mills at her home a few miles northwest of the city. But few of her friends were even aware of her illness and those nearest her did not realize the seriousness of her condition until just a few hours before the final breath came. She suffered an attack of grippe early last week and this was followed by an attack of gall stones. She had been under the care of a physician only a couple of days when symptoms of acute peritonitis appeared. Owing to the congestion of her lungs and consequent effect upon her heart action, it was concluded that an operation would almost certainly be attended with fatal results, and all efforts were turned towards an attempt to save her life through other means. But a wise Heavenly Father, whose ways passeth all understanding, and reached out to beckon her home and all the tender ministrations of earthly hands were unavailing to stay the hand of death.

Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church in this city, conducted by Reverend A. M. McIntosh, and a large assemblage of friends of the deceased gathered to pay their respect to her memory and by their presence attempted to assuage the grief of those most near and dear. Interment was made in Grace Hill Cemetery, where her parents were laid to rest a number of years ago.

Rosa V. Patterson was the youngest child of Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Patterson, pioneer residents of Calliope. She was born in Calliope May 25, 1883 and her entire life was spent in the environs of this community. She attended the Hawarden Schools and after her death of her father, had much of the care of the home as her mother was an invalid for many years prior to her death. She was united in marriage December 25, 1908 to Mr. Harry Mills, who with her two small sons, Lawrence aged 6, and Curtis aged 4, are left to miss the tender and loving care of a devoted wife and mother. She is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Effie Lawrence of Vail, Oregon, Mrs. Carrie Walker of Eldora, Iowa, Mrs. Flora Combellick of Ellendale, North Dakota, and Mrs. A. C. Green of Hawarden.

Any tribute which this writer could offer would fail to do justice to the simple beauty of the noble character who has been torn from our midst. Her life was an example of kindness and unselfishness and she possessed all the qualifications and heart of true womanhood. The community is better for her having lived among us and the sincere sympathy of all goes out to the bereaved husband, sisters and motherless children.
