Bernard Minton, Sr., one of Alton's most wealthiest and best known residents in this section, died at his home at the age of 66. Born near Cologne on the Rhine in 1834, he came to America with his parents in 1854 and grew to manhood near Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

In 1853 with Joseph Umhoefer and five others he went to the gold fields of Australia but returned in nine months after many hardships.

In 1856 he married Miss Elizabeth Holzem. He came to Alton with his family in 1887. Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Minten: Henry W., Christina, Bernard, Margie, Anthony, John, Matt, Will, Jake, and Frank, nine of whom survive.

(Note) He grew up in Fussville (Menomonee Falls) Waukesha County, Wisconsin.
