From the Sioux County Index (Hull), March 15, 1929:

WM. SCHLOSSIN, SR. DIES

The many old time Hull friends of the Wm. Schlossin family were grieved to hear, last Sunday morning, that Mr. Schlossin, who had been an invalid in the home of his son, A. H. Schlossin, at George, for several weeks, had passed away.

Mr. Schlossin was born December 31, 1850 in the Province of Pomerania, East Prussia, Germany, where his young manhood was spent. On September 18, 1879, he was united in marriage to Miss Augusta Busch, and in the year 1882 emigrated to America settling at Pattersonville, now Hull, where he had resided continuously until the death of his wife just a few weeks ago, on February 2nd, since which time he has been cared for in the home of his son, A. H. Schlossin, at George, He was a tailor by trade and was a good workman. He had reached the age of seventy-eight years, two months and ten days.

Mr. Schlossin is survived by three children, Mrs. Henry Techen, of Hull, Wm. A. Schlossin, of Omaha, Nebr., and A. H. Schlossin, of George, and by eight grandchildren.

The funeral was held from the Lutheran church, in Hull, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Goeringer officiating, and the remains were laid to rest beside those of his beloved wife in the Lutheran cemetery north-east of Hull. The Index wishes to join the Hull friends of the bereaved in extending sincere sympathy.

A brief notice of his death in the Alton Democrat, March 15, 1929, Hull news, adds that Sunday morning Mr. Schlossin ate breakfast and about noon complained of not feeling very well and passed away.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index spells the surname Schlosin. It lists only William, b. 30 Dec 1850, died 10 Mar 1929, plus another entry for Schlosin, No Name (11 Feb 1854-2 Feb 1929), who is in fact his wife Augusta, St. Pauls Luth Cem, Hull IA. This appears to be the only source that spells the surname with a single “s”.

His death certificate has William Schlossin, widower of Augusta Schlossin; born December 31, 1850 in Germany; parents’ names not known to the informant, Albert Schlossin; resident of the United States 49 years; occupation, retired tailor; died in the town of George, Lyon County, where he had lived one month, five days, at 12:00 [a.m.?], March 10, 1929; cause, senility; contributory cause, atrophy (general), duration 5 years.

U.S. census records and marriage records for their daughters, on Ancestry.com, also spell the family surname Schlossin. Ancestry.com also has a death register entry from the Eastern Prussian Provinces, Germany [Poland] on Ancestry.com that appears to be for their son Hermann. It spells the surname Schlössin, the father Wilhelm Schlössin and the mother Auguste, nee Busch.
