Ruys, Rentje (Mrs. Martinus), 1864/65-1929

From the Sioux County Index (Hull), February 8, 1929:

Mrs. M. Ruys passed away very suddenly, last Friday morning, following a very short illness with acute diabetes, her age being sixty-four years, five months and twenty-eight days.

Rentje VanBeek was born August 3, 1864, at Doornspyk, Province Gelderland, Netherland, where her girlhood was spent. She came to this country in February 1882, and in the same year was married to M. Ruys, at Spring Lake, Michigan, where they resided for 16 years. From Michigan the family moved to Kansas and in 1917 they moved to Hull.

Mr. and Mrs. Ruys were the parents of six children, namely: Ernest, of Sioux Center; Henry, of Sioux Falls; Anthony, at home; Mrs. Harriet Schaap, of Hull; and Anna and Margaret, at home. There are also five grandchildren.

Besides the bereaved husband and children Mrs. Ruys is also survived by a sister, Minnie VanBeek, of Olathe, Kansas; Bert VanBeek, of Bennett, Nebraska; Art VanBeek, of Portland, Oregon; and John VanBeek, of Holland, Michigan.

The funeral services were conducted last Monday afternoon, from the home and from the Christian Reformed church, Rev. C. Huissen officiating. The Index joins the many friends of the family in extending sincere sympathy.

Her death certificate has her born August 3, 1865; parents Hendrik Van Beek and Hendrikje Blauw; wife of Martinus Ruys; died at 2 a.m. February 1, 1929; cause, uremia; buried at Hull, Iowa.

Neither she nor her husband appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index.
