From the Sioux County Index, January 18, 1929:

Mrs. J. S. Dethmers, nee Anna Edens, passed away at about 3 P. M., Saturday, January 5, 1929, at the age of 74 years and 10 months, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Steven VanderWell, at Rock Valley, following a lingering illness of several months duration.

Mrs. Dethmers was born in Groningen, Netherlands, on March 9th, 1854, and was married to J. S. Dethmers in 1873, who preceded her in death 7 years ago. The greater part of Mrs. Dethmers life, especially her married life, was spent in Sioux County, in the vicinities of Boyden and Hull, coming here when the settlement was still new.

Mrs. Dethmers was the mother of nine children and is survived, besides several children-in-law and grandchildren, by four sons and three daughters. They are: John Dethmers, Edgerton, Minn.; R. P. Dethmers, Sheldon, la.; Albert Dethmers, Boyden, la.; Annette E. Dethmers, Hull, la.; Mrs. (Rev.) R. J. Vanden Berg, Zeeland. Mich.; Ike Dethmers, Hull, Ia.; and Mrs. Steven Vander Well, Rock Valley. la.

Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday at 1:30 and 2:00 o'clock, P. M., at the First Reformed church In Rock Valley, and the remains were taken to Boyden for burial.

An obituary containing much of the same information was published in the Rock Valley Bee, January 11, 1929. It adds that she came with her husband and children to this country about 35 years ago. The family lived near Hull for a few years and then moved to Leota, Minn., and a few years later to Boyden. For the past five years she made her home in Rock Valley with her daughter, Mrs. Steve Vander Well.

From the Alton Democrat, January 18, 1929, Hull news:

The Dethmers of the Hull Hardware firm and Nurse Dethmers of the local hospital spent several days of the past week at the bedside of their mother, Mrs. J. S. Dethmers who was very ill at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Steve Vander Well at Rock Valley. Early Sunday morning Mrs. Detmers passed away. Funeral services were held at Rock Valley Tuesday afternoon and burial at Boyden. Mrs. Detmers had been ailing for the past few years due to diabetes.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has Dethmers, Anna E., b. 9 Mar 1854, d. 5 Jan 1929, Mother, Sheridan Twp Cem, Boyden Ia.

Her death certificate has her as Mrs. Anna Dethmars [all other sources spell it Dethmers] and adds her spouse, John Dethmars; parents, John Edens and Anna Geertsma, both born in the Netherlands; cause of death, diabetes and pernicious anemia, duration 2 years.
