From the Rock Valley Bee, January 4, 1929:

YOUNG MAN COMMITS SUICIDE

Henry Vaner [i.e., Vander] Schaaf was found dead in a sweet clover field on the W. Ver Mulm farm near his home southwest of Rock Valley Friday morning. Mr. Ver Mulm discovered the body with the gun nearby. The young man left his home Christmas day apparently to go hunting. He was in the habit of going away at times and not returning for a few days, and so no alarm was felt by his parents and other relatives at home. He was about twenty-six years of age and had lived in this vicinity practically all his life. He leaves his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Simon Vander Schaaf and twelve brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at the church at Lebanon Tuesday afternoon.

From the Ireton Ledger, January 10, 1929, Center and Eagle Township news:

Mr. and Mrs. George Bartlett motored to Lebanon Monday to attend the funeral services of Mrs. Bartlett’s nephew, Henry VanderSchaaf of Plato Township who was buried at Lebanon that day. The young man was found dead in the corn field following a hunting accident last week. [Similar news notes in other area newspapers.]

His death certificate has Henry Vander Schaaf, farmer’s son, born Feb 25, 1904 in Sioux County; parents Simon Vander Schaaf and Tillie Baron, both born in the Netherlands; died Dec 28, 1928 at about 9 a.m., of suicide from a gun shot wound; buried at Lebanon, Jan. 1, 1929.
