FORMER PRIEST HERE EXPIRES--VERY REVEREND EDWARD MASTERSON DIED AT FORT DODGE FRIDAY--WAS PAST 62 YEARS OF AGE AND SERVED AS PASTOR OF ST. MARY’S CHURCH FOR PERIOD OF FIVE YEARS

The Very Reverend Edward Masterson, V. F. Pastor of Corpus Christi Church, Fort Dodge, and a former pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hawarden died last Friday morning at Fort Dodge.

When he failed to rise for early morning Mass, his assistant went to his room and found the Reverend Father Masterson dead for several hours, the victim of a heart attack.

Reverend Father Masterson was born August 15, 1874, in Ireland, so was nearly 63 years of age at the time of his death. He attended St. Patrick’s College and St. Patrick’s Seminary at Carlow, Ireland, where he was ordained June 11, 1899, by Most Reverend Patrick Foley, D. D. He came to America shortly after his ordination.

After coming to America he served for three years as assistant at St. Mary’s Church in Sioux City, now the Cathedral of the Epiphany. From Sioux City he came to Hawarden about 1902 as pastor of St. Mary’s Church and served here for a period of about five years. Subsequently he held pastorates at Varina, Cherokee, Boone, and Corpus Christi, Fort Dodge. At. The time of his death he was one of the diocesan consultors and also one of the judges of the matrimonial court of the diocese of Sioux City. He was a vigorous, energetic man who never spared himself in the work of his parish.

The many former parishioners and friends here of Reverend Father Masterson learned with regret of his sudden passing. He was highly revered in this community where he served his church so faithfully and well.

Funeral services were held at 10 o’clock Monday morning at Corpus Christi Church, Fort Dodge.
